What are Sun Salutations?

Sun Salutations, also known as Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit, are a series of yoga poses performed in a flowing sequence. They are traditionally practiced in the morning to greet the new day and invigorate the body. Sun Salutations combine movement, breath, and mindfulness to create a holistic practice that benefits both the body and mind.

Benefits of Mindful Movement and Sun Salutations:

  • Boosts circulation and metabolism
  • Increases focus and concentration
  • Promotes relaxation and reduces stress
  • Enhances overall well-being

How to Practice Sun Salutations:

  1. Start in Mountain Pose (Tadasana) with palms together at your heart center.
  2. Inhale, raise your arms overhead in Upward Salute (Urdhva Hastasana).
  3. Exhale, fold forward into Forward Fold (Uttanasana).
  4. Inhale, lift halfway in Halfway Lift (Ardha Uttanasana).
  5. Exhale, step back into Plank Pose and lower down into Chaturanga Dandasana.
  6. Inhale, lift into Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana).
  7. Exhale, lift your hips into Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana).
  8. Inhale, step or jump to the top of your mat, coming back to Forward Fold.
  9. Exhale, return to Mountain Pose with hands at heart center.

Repeat this sequence several times, coordinating each movement with your breath. Feel free to modify the poses to suit your body and level of experience.
